He joined BNP in 1983 as Deputy Director of Banque Nationale de Paris Intercontinentale, before managing European activities in 1985. He then joined the Central Networks Department in 1987, and was promoted to Central Director in 1990, and then Deputy Chief Executive Officer of BNP, in charge of networks, in 1992. He became Chief Executive Officer of BNP in 1996 and Deputy Chief Executive Officer of BNP Paribas in 1999. In March 2000, he was appointed Director and Deputy Chief Executive Officer of BNP Paribas, and then Director and Chief Executive Officer of BNP Paribas in May 2003. He is an Officer of the Ordre National du Merite and a Knight of the Legion dHonneur. He served as Chairman of the Board of BNP Paribas until 2014. He is currently also a Director of Veolia Environnement, Finastra and Alstom. since 2005.
