Dr. Daniel L. Vasella, M.D., is Honorary Chairman of the Board of Novartis Inc. He was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Novartis from February 1, 2010 until 2013. He was Chairman of the Chairman Committee at the Company. He resigned from his position as Chief Executive Officer of the Company on February 1, 2010. He had served as CEO and Executive Member of the Board of Directors of Novartis AG since the merger that created Novartis AG in 1996. He was appointed Company Chairman of the Board of Directors in 1999. Befor the Novartis AG merger, Dr. Vasella was CEO of Sandoz Pharma Ltd. and Member of the Sandoz Group Executive Committee. From 1988 to 1992, he was with Sandoz Pharmaceuticals Corporation in the United States, prior to which he held a number of medical positions in Switzerland. Dr. Vasella is Member of the Board of Directors of PepsiCo, Inc. He is also Member of the International Board of Governors of the Peres Center for Peace in Israel, the International Business Leaders Advisory Council for the Mayor of Shanghai, the Global Health Program Advisory Panel of the Bill Melinda Gates Foundation, and is a foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is also Member of the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. In addition, Dr. Vasella serves as Member of several industry associations and educational institutions. Dr. Vasella graduated with a Medical Doctor title from Universitaet Bern in 1979 since 2013.
