Cumming graduated from the University of Cape Town with a BSc degree in 1975 and has worked in various exploration capacities in diverse African countries for 39 years. He is a SACNASPregistered geoscientist and is a member of the Geological Society of South Africa. His initial 26year work experience was spent with the Falconbridge Ltd. group companies through South Africa and West Africa exploring for a nickel, copper, gold, diamonds and uranium. Further work experience was gained in the Bushveld igneous complex, Zambian copper belt and Sierra Leone. He was the chief operating officer for the G&B Group of companies between 2007 and 2012 and was instrumental in generating many of the group exploration projects, including the Danakil potash project. He has also served as vicepresident of operations, as a director of Ethiopian Potash Corporation on the board of AgriMinco and as the chief executive officer
